Post Minister asks UPU to lift sanctions against Somalia


(Bern, Switzerland – April 10, 2019) Somalia’s minister for Post, Telecom and Technology, H. E. Eng. Abdi Ashur Hassan, has officially asked Universal Postal Union (UPU) to lift sanctions imposed on Somalia that denied the country a meaningful participation in union activities.

Speaking to members of Council of Administration at UPU Headquarters in Bern, Switzerland, the minister said the postal services support the economy of every country in many ways as they provide the right logistics for e-commerce to flourish and create employment opportunities for the millions of youth.

The minister highlighted that the resumption of postal services in Somalia will require a number of major tasks including formulation of national policy and legislative framework; preparation of operational plans; product and market development; recruitment and development of human resources; the procurement of operational equipment; and the reconstruction of post offices across major cities.

H.E. Mr. Hassan thanked the UPU for the support it has provided to Somalia over the past few years that helped resume international incoming mail among other short initiatives. “I take this opportunity to thank the UPU and, in particular, the Director General Ambassador Bishar Hussein for making this possible,” said the minister.

“I appeal to UPU members’ generous support in the arduous task of reconstruction of postal services in Somalia. I pledge the support of the Government of Federal Republic of Somalia to all initiatives to revive postal services that will enable us to rejoin the global postal fraternity,” added the minister.

UPU Director General, H.E. Bishar Hussein, said UPU will make everything it can to facilitate Somalia rejoining the UPU family, acknowledging that the positive initiatives and commitment that the Somalia Ministry of Post has made in recent years
